The overwhelming majority of Westside alumni go on to further education, employment or training after Westside. Of those who have since finished their courses, some are working in companies like British Gas, or locally as carpenters, chefs or gardeners. We are particularly proud of one alumnus who is now at university.

Hall of Fame: Alumni Stories

When 'OA' arrived at Westside, he had come off the rails at his school and was bored, disaffected and alienated. Within weeks of being at Westside, with the aid of the staff, OA turned himself around and began to focus on learning. He got his GCSEs and has since trained to be a mechanic, as well as supporting himself and his family with a job at Accessorize. From 2012-2013, OA worked at Westside School as a Teaching Assistant and helped to develop the new Motor Vehicles vocational qualification.

I am the poster child of Westside School: the living, smiling proof that Westside works..."
 'OA', former Westside student

'TR' was referred to Westside in 2008, after poor school attendance, the anxiety of problems at home and having churned between a number of placements, including spending almost a year out of school being tutored. His progress was not age-appropriate and his drug use was of concern to all those around him. Yet Westside soon discovered that TR was academically able and creative and could flourish in an environment where he could trust. He went on to gain 4 full GCSEs including Maths and English and studied Media Studies at a local college.

Progression & Work Placements

Here at Westside, we clearly establish individual aims for each student. Students completing Year 11 undertake a detailed Exit Plan with our Pathways Guidance Officer. The plan identifies the after-school options to students and what they need to do to make them happen. The plan is worked upon extensively during the late summer term.

We provide CV and interview training for Year 11s after exams. Where possible, students are provided with work placements with supportive local employers.

Alumni keep in touch via our Facebook page and often come back to the school for advice and guidance at various stages. We are always happy to see past students.

If you are interested in providing a Westside student with a work placement, please fill out the contact form below.
