Curriculum & Activities

Curriculum Overview

At the core of the Westside provision lies academic attainment, to ensure that all our students leave Year 11 work-ready and suitably qualified.

Since September 2013, we have introduced a minimum of eight GCSEs or equivalent for each student in Year 11.

A personalised approach to the curriculum offer is promoted wherever possible, allowing for ultimate flexibility within the structured timetable. Westside’s 1:3 staff to student ratio means that the one-to-one opportunities necessary to achieve this can be created across the curriculum and throughout the day.

Some subjects can be accredited as early as Year 9 : Functional Skills Level 1 in Literacy and/or Numeracy are examples of this. Thereafter, students can progress to Level 1 and 2 qualifications, as appropriate, through Years 10 and 11.

Such intensive focus on literacy and numeracy achievement helps equip students’ capacity to improve their academic outcomes – and increases wellbeing, self-esteem and confidence.

The Westside curriculum has been created to aid progressions through all ability levels and focuses on a prescribed aspect, with vocational options in Years 10 and 11. The subjects offered provide a rich and varied range of material designed to re-engage and motivate an originally disaffected student. Our co-educational setting ensures that all choices are suitably and equally encouraged for both boys and girls.

A broad and balanced curriculum enables all young people to become:

Successful independent learners who enjoy learning, make progress and achieve
Confident individuals who are able to live safe, healthy and fulfilling lives
Responsible citizens who make a positive contribution to society
